PRESENTED BY 21c MUSEUM & LOUISVILLE FILM SOCIETY

This year’s line-up features work created from all over the state, including videos from Lexington, Frankfort, Louisville, and Whitesburg. The fifteen shorts employ a variety of styles and techniques. Showcase attendees will be treated to everything from animated tales to music videos, from slice of life documentaries to narrative vignettes, plus original experimental treatments. This year’s showcase exemplifies the wide berth of original work created here in Kentucky. Entrants range from grammar school students to professionals working in the industry, and the artists featured in this year’s showcase suggests a substantial amount of talent working in the state of Kentucky today.

1) Everybody’s Hugging (1) – Andrew Lafrate
Kertis Creative (Casey Chalmers, Stephen Kertis, Brett Marshall, Eric Stemen)
Andrew Lafrate, somewhat willing participants at Crossfit da Ville
3 minutes 36 seconds

Everybody’s Hugging is an ongoing collaborative music, film and photography project that pairs musicians with cinematographers in unique locations. How do we as creative accomplices, respond to, address, and accompany the resulting friction?  Each episode is shot without rehearsal and recorded live as the musicians struggle with or incorporate their environments. This process of distilling the creative process to minutes instead of days, and then sealing the lid on it promotes intimacy, immediacy and hopefully awesomeness in the participants both in front of and behind the camera. The hard bodies, boiled meats, and soapy baptisms are just part of the process.

12) Untitled (2011)
Chris Little, Louisville, KY
Directed by: Chris Little
4 minutes 44 seconds

I wanted to think about the natural world in terms of ones and zeros.

When watching video online or on television, we sometimes are oblivious to the medium of video. We hardly acknowledge it, until something “wrong” happens with the technology. Sometimes small glitches will occur in sound and video. The small glitches we notice when watching videos online and on television are parts of our viewing experience. Though these “glitches” mostly rally as an annoyance, and are not something to be championed, I wonder if they should be? Are these glitches a tiny revolution in the world of digital cells we know as pixels? Is this a mutation in the genetic code of digital video? In this film, I was very interested in exploring our viewing experience in two worlds: the world of information transmitted digitally and the world of nature.
